In a stunning turn of events at UFC 328, Sean Strickland defeated Khamzat Chimaev via split decision to reclaim the UFC middleweight championship. The judges scored the fight 48-47, 47-48, 48-47 in favor of Strickland. It marked Strickland’s second middleweight title reign, while Chimaev suffered his first loss in the UFC.
Strickland, who had shocked the MMA world less than three years ago by taking the belt from one of the sport’s biggest stars, once again solved a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Against Chimaev, a fighter known for his dominant 15-0 start, Strickland stuffed takedowns, reversed grappling exchanges, and put the champion on his back. He wore down Chimaev with precise jabs and controlled the pace on the feet, ultimately earning the decision.
All three judges awarded Strickland the second and third rounds, and two of them gave him the fifth, securing the victory.
In the co-main event, Joshua Van retained his flyweight title by defeating Tatsuro Taira via TKO in the fifth round.
