The NBA world was rocked on Tuesday by the sudden passing of Memphis Grizzlies standout Brandon Clarke at the age of 29. Tributes poured in from across the league, led by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
“We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of Brandon Clarke. As one of the longest-tenured players in Grizzlies history, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who approached the game with incredible passion and tenacity. Our deepest condolences go out to Brandon’s family, friends, and the entire Grizzlies organization,” Silver said in a statement.
The Grizzlies organization also released a statement expressing profound grief: “We are devastated by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke. He was an exceptional teammate and an even better person. His impact on our team and the Memphis community will never be forgotten. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Former NBA players joined the chorus of mourning. “Damn! This is heartbreaking! Rest in peace, Brandon Clarke,” Kendrick Perkins wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Clarke, who played college basketball at Gonzaga, was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. In the 2025-26 season, he averaged 4 points per game. His NBA career was hampered by injuries. According to ESPN, he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in March 2023, causing him to miss the remainder of that season and play only six games the following campaign. After appearing in 64 games in 2024-25, Clarke was limited to just two games this season due to calf and knee issues.
At the time of reporting, the cause of death had not been released. Grizzlies fans and the entire NBA community are mourning the devastating loss.
